Where is the Minecraft mods folder?
The default location is inside the Minecraft Java game directory, but launcher-managed profiles can have a different mods folder for every instance.

Default Minecraft mods folder paths
For the standard Minecraft Java Edition game directory, the usual paths are:
- WINWindows
%appdata%\.minecraft\mods - MACmacOS
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - LNXLinux
~/.minecraft/mods
These paths apply only when the active installation uses the default game directory. A custom launcher or profile setting can point Minecraft somewhere else.
These default paths match Fabric's current Installing Mods documentation, which also advises checking third-party launcher instructions.
Standard folder vs launcher instances
Many launchers isolate modpacks or profiles in separate instance directories. That keeps worlds, configuration and mods apart. In that setup, each instance has its own mods folder and the global .minecraft/mods folder may be ignored.
Do not search for a random .minecraft folder and assume it is active. Confirm the game directory tied to the exact profile you launch.
Find the directory from your launcher
- 01
Select the profile or instance
Choose the same entry you use to start the modded game.
- 02
Open its folder or settings
Look for an option such as open folder, instance folder, game directory or installation directory.
- 03
Confirm the contents
The active directory normally contains folders such as
config,logs,savesorresourcepacksafter the instance has run. - 04
Open its mods folder
Use that instance's folder, not another profile with a similar name.
What if the mods folder is missing?
First launch the correct Fabric profile once, then close Minecraft. Inside the confirmed game or instance directory, create a folder named exactly mods in lowercase. Do not create it inside versions, resourcepacks or a downloaded mod archive.
If Fabric Loader is not installed for that profile, creating the folder alone will not make mods load. Follow the full Fabric installation guide.
Place mod JARs in the folder
Move the downloaded .jar files into the active instance's mods folder. Keep the JARs intact; do not unzip them. Include every dependency listed by the mod author.
- 01Game versionMatches the active instance
- 02Mod loaderFabric build, not Forge or NeoForge
- 03DependenciesCorrect versions in the same folder
- 04DuplicatesOne intended version of each mod
See Fabric Loader vs Fabric API if a download page lists both terms.
Signs you used the wrong folder
If Minecraft opens normally but none of the newly added mods appear—and Fabric itself is definitely active—the launcher may be using another instance directory. Open the folder from the running profile and compare it with the folder you edited.
If Minecraft stops with an error, the folder may be correct and the problem may instead be a version, dependency or conflict. Use the Fabric mod not loading checklist before moving files again.
