Fabric Loader vs Fabric API: what is the difference?
Fabric Loader starts Fabric mods. Fabric API is an optional shared library required by some mods. They work together, but they are not the same thing.

The short answer
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Fabric Loader | Loads Fabric mods and checks their declared dependencies when Minecraft starts. |
| Fabric API | A separate collection of shared hooks and utilities that some mods use. |
Installing Fabric Loader does not automatically install Fabric API. Fabric API is normally placed in the active instance's mods folder like another mod.
The official Fabric Loader documentation describes Loader as the component that loads mods and resolves their declared dependencies.
What Fabric Loader does
Fabric Loader is the mod loader. A launcher profile or instance configured for Fabric uses it to discover compatible JARs, read their metadata and start them with Minecraft. Without it, the regular game profile does not load Fabric mods.
Loader also checks declared requirements. That is why a startup message can identify a missing dependency, unsupported game version or incompatible combination before the game opens.
What Fabric API does
Fabric API offers commonly used interfaces and events so mod authors do not have to implement every integration themselves. It is broad and widely used, but not every Fabric mod needs it.
Do not assume either way. A focused mod may depend only on Fabric Loader, while another may explicitly require Fabric API plus another library. The release page or Loader error is the authority for that mod.
How to check a mod's dependencies
- 01
Read the official release page
Look for Minecraft version, mod loader and required dependencies.
- 02
Match the Minecraft version
Fabric API builds and mods target specific game versions; “Fabric” alone is not enough.
- 03
Keep all files in one release line
A dependency for another Minecraft version can fail even when the dependency name is correct.
- 04
Read Loader's message
It commonly provides the missing mod ID and required version range.

What happens when Fabric API is missing?
If a mod declares Fabric API as required, Fabric Loader will normally stop startup and report that dependency. Install a compatible Fabric API build for the same Minecraft version in the same instance's mods folder, then launch again.
If the mod does not declare Fabric API as required, adding it is not a universal fix. Work through the version, folder and conflict checks in Fabric mod not loading?
Examples from current Cipher mods
- AEAntiEffectFabric Loader; no Fabric API
- BCBetterChatLoader + API + Cipher HUB 1.0.0+
- HUBCipher HUBFabric Loader + Fabric API
The requirements differ even though all three are Fabric mods. Check the exact product page in the official Cipher mods directory, or compare every Minecraft, Loader and Java line in the compatibility matrix.
